Dr. Dave Weldon has been named to lead US centers for disease control and prevention. His confirmation hearing is Thursday, March 13. Recently I reviewed some of Weldon’s beliefs about vaccines, but his previous comments on reproductive care and recent life issues are also worth researching.
Reproductive health
Many have expressed concern about Weldon’s stances on reproductive care. In terms of infectious diseases he has questioned the safety of HPV vaccinewhich not only reduces cervical cancer dramatically, but is shown to save lives. Weldon has also promoted inaccurate information that abortions cause breast cancer.
It also supports sex education only for abstinence. This is a massive problem, with sexually transmitted infections growing and access to declining medical care for many patients. In 2022, the CDC noted that syphilis rates were the highest since the 1950s.
In 2023, there were 209,253 cases of syphilis. The most worrying was the increase in congenital syphilis (newborns infected by their mothers) by 3% compared to a year ago. Syphilis can be deadly. Further, there was such a lack of Benzathine penicillin G, the only recommended medicine for treating uncomplicated syphilis in pregnancy, which the FDA allowed the import of the drug from France. These increasing cases of syphilis reflect a public health failure, which will only deteriorate as public health fund cuts become deeper.
Weldon is probably best known for “Weldon change”, who says that “[n]o Qualified Health Plan offered through an exchange may discriminate against any healthcare provider or a health care institution because of its willingness to provide, pay, ensure coverage or referral of abortions. “This includes hospitals, health insurance plans, doctors and nurses – who refuse to provide, cover, pay or refer to abortion. The result is that providers can deny care of abortion, references and even information for patients without punishment. Weldon has supported a lot Other bills against abortion. The National Center for the Law on Women warns that Weldon’s powers can lead to increased supervision and pursuit to criminalize abortion, as proposed by the 2025 project, with the loss of media funds for states refusing to provide detailed information. In an interview with my magazine, President Trump showed that decisions to monitor pregnancy and punish women who receive abortions should be left to the states.
AGE: Do you think states should monitor women’s pregnancies So can they know if they have received an abortion after stopping?
Trump: I think they can do it. Again, you will need to talk to individual states.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged to review Mifepriston’s security. The drug changes the level of progesterone, preventing the continuation of an early pregnancy. The Food and Drug Administration has significant data showing drug safety over many years. CDC may be following pregnancies and abortions closer than before. Weldon is firmly anti-abort. How will this review project affect?
Mother’s death
CDC collects pregnancy -related results. Mother’s mortality reviews do not currently consider whether access to abortion or delays to abortion care contribute to deaths, it is reported because CDC recommendations do not direct committees to address that issue.
Right now, the data of the pregnancy mortality surveillance system include this table of mortality narrative about the race/ethnicity that notes that the Non-Hyspanic Indian or local alaska locals have a much higher rate of death (ratio 118.7) compared to non-spanic black (Report 69.3) 24.3). Over 80% of pregnancy -related deaths were determined to be preventable.
Maternal sepsis and mortality have grown up Significantly as states like Texas presented a strict prohibition of abortion. Mother’s mortality reviews were detained in Texas and George, as they had been diligently in Idaho.
The CDC pregnancy risk assessment system, located since 1988, was Close last month Due to the claims Pram promoted “Dei”, or diversity, equality and inclusion. Without access to data on racial and economic inequalities in health results due to President Trump’s executive order to censor words and programs related to Dei, appropriate interventions may no longer be possible and mother’s mortality is likely to increase.
Given these restrictions, senators of an area may ask Weldon is what, like the head of the CDC, he would do to address the mother’s mortality, especially among poor women in color.
The last issues of life-would the testaments of life be honored?
In 2007, Weldon chose to intervene in the case of Terri Schiavo when her husband decided to attract artificial food and food after four years of support as she was still in a constant vegetative state.
Schiavo had previously told the family that she would not want to be artificially kept alive if it depended on the care of others. Weldon presented the legal protection act of the incompetent affair, allowing federal courts to review the state court’s decisions to allow AFN withdrawal or holding. The draft law was finally approved and signed by President George W. Bush. All parents’ complaints to continue the meals were denied and the tube was removed.
As chief of CDC, Weldon will oversee more than traditional public health activities such as vaccination and responses to explosions. Many are concerned that his strong beliefs can interfere with personal medical decisions.
Note: I reached Dr. Weldon but I still haven’t received an answer.
